August 27, 2012 (El Cajon) -- Grossmont Union High School District and Grossmont High School celebrated the topping out of the new humanities building on Tuesday, Aug. 21. The ceremony marked the completion of the steel framing as the construction team set the final beam into place. The humanities building is scheduled for completion in spring of 2013.
The 35,000-square foot humanities classroom building is the largest classroom project in the Proposition U construction program. Upon completion, the new two-story building will feature 31 state-of-the-art classrooms for English, social science, math and special education classes. The construction also includes the addition of six concrete tennis courts and Career Technical Education facility for automotive technology students. The building replaces eight outdated re-locatable classroom buildings.
Tuesday’s topping out ceremony featured opening remarks from Grossmont High School Principal Dan Barnes and a hosted barbeque for attending guests.
The Proposition U bond program, which voters passed in 2008, funded the project. The program aims to improve and modernize classroom buildings throughout the district. The project team includes program manager Gafcon, Inc., construction manager Turner Construction, contractor Riha Construction, architect LPA, Inc., and steel contractor Golden Gate Iron, Inc.
